ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP FOR VETERAN GIEL NEL
Veteran former national champion Giel Nel has added two more cross country championships to his long list of successes.
Nel and co-driver Paul Slabbert in the KEC Zarco, won both the Special Vehicle overall and Class P championships in the Northern Regions Cross Country Championship. Fifth place on the final event of the season, the Atlas Copco Gold 400 in Westonaria, was enough to clinch both titles for Nel and Slabbert.
In the overall championship Nel finished 13 points clear of Johan Mitchell (Sandmaster) in the driver title race. Behind Nel and Mitchell there was a close battle with just five points separating Francois Smit (Sandmaster Magnum), veteran Wolf-Peter Pfumfei (WPP) and Kobus Fourie in another singleseater WPP.
In the Class P driver championship Nel finished ahead of Johan Mitchell, who shared a Sandmaster with Jeremy and Jason Mitchell, and Andre Fourie in a Zarco. Slabbert was well clear of Leon Schutte, who sat alongside Fourie, and Lood Combrink who took Special vehicle overall honours with Rikus Prinsloo, in a BAT on the Westonaria race.
There was a change of order in Class B where Pfumfei, another veteran, finished ahead of Smit in the driver championship. In a desperately close finish for second and third Smit edged out Marthinus le Roux, who shared a Sandmaster with Gustav Pienaar, with a single point the difference.
With Pfumfei and Smit both out in singleseater cars the co-driver championship went to Gerhard Roos who shared a Zarco Sandmaster with Johan Steyn. Pienaar was a close second ahead of Joshua Huyser.
A Mitsubishi Pajero with a rich racing history behind it carried Rob Reid and Bodo Schwegler to both the Production Vehicle overall and Class E titles. In both championships Reid and Schwegler were given a run for their money by Wessel and Albertus Kriel in their Ford Ranger.
Third in the overall driver championship went to Rustenburg based Dana Vos (Vossies Toyota Hilux) ahead of Rudolph du Toit in a Toyota Hilux. The Atlas Copco 400 was a good one for the Vos family.
Vos junior and Henri de Kock took overall Production Vehicle honours in the Northern regions series, with father Willem and Werner Weis (Vossies BMW X3) scoring a maiden national championship win in the final event in the Donaldson Cross Country Championship.
The Reid/Schwegler and Kriel combinations again led the way in the Class E championship. Dolf Du Toit was third among the drivers with youngster Ruan Peirce, who shared a Toyota Hilux with Dylan Venter, taking third place in the co-driver title race.
Vos and co-driver Henri de Kock took the Class D driver and co-driver titles. Paul Scheepers and Danie Scholtz were second and third among the drivers, with PJ Jones and Ludi Scholtz second and third in the co-driver championship.
