Van der Westhuizen on the podium in MSA national MX

Pietermaritzburg teenager Dirco van der Westhuizen continues to impress in his first year of 125 High School motocross with podium finishes in each of the two races that made up the second round of the Motorsport South Africa-sanctioned national motocross championship at the Terra Topia circuit near Johannesburg last weekend.

After qualifying his Full Throttle Yamaha 125 supported by Bridgestone and SupaQuick in fourth place behind the KTMs of championship leader and fellow KZN rider Bradley Cox and local riders Jason Visser and Tristan Cuthbert, the 14-year-old grade 8 pupil finished third in both of the day’s two races behind Cox and Visser.

“The track was very fast and not very technical – it was almost flat-track racing – which did not suit my riding style or my bike,” said Van der Westhuizen. “We have a bit of work to do on our bike to make it more competitive under these track conditions.”

Despite making a good start in race one and holding second place behind Cox in the early laps, he could do nothing to prevent Visser from overtaking him on a straight, but hung on to take third place on the podium at the end of the race.

A poor start in race two saw him down in fifth place into the first corner, but he quickly moved up to fourth and was soon challenging Cuthbert for a podium place. He managed to get through after a couple of laps, but by then Cox and Visser had got away and opened up a big gap.

Van der Westhuizen dug deep and gradually closed the gap to Visser from 10 seconds to just two when the chequered flag came out.

“This was not my best outing of the year,” he admitted. “But I’m not discouraged. This is my first season in the High School class (for riders aged between 14 and 17) and I’m happy to be in the top three of both the series I’m contesting (MSA and WOMZA). I’m younger and smaller than my main rivals, so I have to work that much harder. I enjoy the challenge and can’t wait for my next race.”

Van der Westhuizen will next be in action in the fourth and final round of the WOMZA national series in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, on June 16.
