NORTHERN REGIONS CROSS COUNTRY SERIES HEADS FOR VREDEFORT
Northern Region Cross County Championship competitors will head for Vredefort, 140 kilometres south of Johannesburg, for round four of the series on June 8.
With the Toyota Kalahari Botswana1000 Desert Race, round four of the Donaldson Cross Country Championship, scheduled for later in the month it is expected that a number of national competitors will take the opportunity to do some testing. Vredefort route director Roelf du Plessis says the route is a combination of fast and technical sections and is not a car breaker.
On the Special Vehicle front veteran Giel Nel and Paul Slabbert currently lead the championship and Class P in the Portable Shade Zarco. They have a small lead over Andre Fourie, the father of national competitor Marius Fourie, and Leon Schutte in the PHB Zarco who are looking for the overall win that has eluded them this season.
Johan Michell and nephew Johan Michell junior will be eager to repeat their overall win last time out in Vryburg, but the biggest challenge is likely to come from the father and son combination of Tony and Michael Gouveia. The Benoni pair have upgraded their BAT to Class P specifications and scored a creditable second while ‘testing’ at the Nkomazi 400 national race in Mpumalanga.
Youngsters Adriaan Roets and Sean van Staden also pose a threat in the KEC BAT. The two teenagers will be looking to gather in valuable points after a disappointing non finish in Vryburg.
Veteran Wolf-Peter Pfumfei (WPP) leads the Class B championship after three consistent races where he scored points each time out. Consistency has been a problem for other competitors including Manny Fernandes and Joshua Huyser, Cobus Fourie and Tinus le Roux and Gustav Pienaar, in their Sandmaster, who have twice failed to see out the distance.
The Production Vehicle championship is wide open with Andre and Anton van den Berg currently enjoying a slender lead over Danie and Ludi Scholtz. Both crews will be chased by Rob Reid and Bodo Schwegler in their Mitsubishi.
The club class brigade will also be out in numbers and Jaco du Plessis and Louis Bester will be chased by Jannie and Bees Labuschagne and the ever present Willie Welman and Alwyn van Heerden in their Bantam bakkie.
National competitors who decide to make the trip to Vredefort do not need to do the prologue that determines grid positions. National competitors who enter on line via www.sacrosscountryracing.co.za can also do documentation up to 10h30 for the 12h00 start.
