TOP FIELD FOR NORTHERN REGIONS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER
The opening round of this year’s Northern Regions Cross Country Car Championship in Stella on February 16 has drawn a top entry with some close competition on the cards in the Production and Special Vehicle categories.
A number of national championship competitors will also take the opportunity of using the Stella event as a shakedown before the opening event of the season on March 1 and 2. On the Northern Regions front there are one or two interesting changes and an interesting season lies ahead.
One of the changes sees reigning Special Vehicle champions Tony and Michael Gouveia move up a notch from Class B to Class P. The Benoni father and son pair has fitted a Lexus V8 motor to their Gearbox Services BAT and after dominating Class B last season will fancy their chances in Class P.
Major opposition will come from teenagers Adriaan Roets and Sean van Staden in the KEC BAT and Ferdie Petersen and Craig Galvin who have also switched to Lexus V8 power in a Raceco. Not to be left out of the equation is veteran Giel Nel, now partnered by former national co-driver James Rossouw in the Portable Shade Zarco, although the pair will need to up the pace to stay with the youngsters.
With the Gouveias moving up a notch Martinus le Roux and Gustav Pienaar will be looking to fill the vacuum left by the Gouveias. Sheer consistency is likely to see veteran Peter Pfumfei (WPP) throw his hat into the ring.
On the Production vehicle front Roelof du Plessis and Marlise Scheepers will be looking for improved fortunes in Class D after a string of non finishes last season. Class E will also see a continuation of the sibling rivalry between Gene Boshoff/Mia van Wyk and Ian Boshoff/Lotter Klein in a pair of Toyota Hilux entries – with the Boshoff brothers looking to mix it with the Class D competitors.
Heading the list of national competitors making the trip to Stella will be Dakar Rally competitor Johan van Staden who will be out in the ex Chris Visser Toyota Hilux with Adri Roets doing co-driver duties.
The Ford Uni Freight team, based in Harrismith will be out in force with two cars. Kobus van Tonder will be navigating for son Jacques in the four litre Ford Ranger with son in law Freddie Kriel taking over driving duties in the SP Class Ford Ranger V8 with van Tonder’s daughter Lizelle in the co-driver’s seat.
Force Fuel Toyota pair Luke Botha and Kevin Durston, who will be making his debut, will also take the opportunity of gaining some seat time before the first national race of the season.
Race headquarters and the designated service point will be seven kilometres outside Stella at Doringkraal. Public entry to these areas is free.
