GOLD 400 WIN TOPS SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR GOUVEIAS
Winning Class B on the recent Gold 400 on the West rand, the final round of the Northern region Off Road Championship, capped a highly successful season for Tony and Michael Gouveia.
The father and son team from Benoni went through the season unbeaten in Class B in the Gearbox Services BAT and romped away with the Special Vehicle overall championship. The cherry on the top for the Gouveias at the Gold 400 came via the Class B win in their first outing in the Absa national series.
The overall win in the Special Vehicle category and Class P honours on the West Rand went to veteran Giel Nel and James Rossouw in the Portable Shade Zarco Lite. Rossouw, who previously sat alongside Johan van Staden in the national championship, has replaced Johan de Klerk in the Portable Shade team.
Nel and de Klerk, who is emigrating to Australia, wrapped up the Class P championship prior to the Gold 400. Nel, who is in his late 60s, and de Klerk also finished runners-up to the Gouveias in the Special vehicle overall championship.
On the Production Vehicle front Ian Boshoff (Toyota Hilux) won the driver’s championship ahead of Hennie Lemmer (Mitsubishi Colt) who missed the Gold 400. In an about turn Lemmer’s co-driver, Paul Slabbert, took co-driver honours ahead of Mia van Wyk who linked up with Boshoff from round four of the championship.
Class D honours on the Gold 400 went to Dana Vos and Tjaart van der Walt, in Toyota Hilux. They were comfortably ahead of Jaco Visser and Johan Pople in a Mitsubishi Colt.
Jhaandre Coetzee and Cailo labuschagne (Toyota Hilux) ended the season on a high note when they won Class E on the West Rand event. They finished ahead of Luke Botha/Carl Reichel (Force Fuel Toyota Hilux) with Gene Boshoff/Lotter Klein and Ian Boshoff/Mia van Wyk third and fourth in Toyota Hilux entries.
