RFS Motorsport completes off road racing season with a strong performance

RFS Motorsport’s Christiaan du Plooy and Henk Janse van Vuuren (BMW X3) finished third in the season-ending Gold 400 in Gauteng on Saturday to give the Pretoria-based team a strong finish in the 2013 Absa South African Off Road Racing Production Vehicle Championship.

One of the up-and-coming young combinations in off road racing’s premier Special Production class, the pair finished the season in a creditable fourth place after enjoying a maiden win in the Sun City round in June.

Sadly, it was the final appearance in national championship off road racing for their illustrious team-mates, former champions Hannes Grobler and champion Hennie ter Stege in the second RFS BMW X3.

Grobler, who hangs up his gloves after a distinguished 36-year career in motor sport, and Ter Stege looked headed for what would have been a glorious podium finish in their last competitive outing together when they were slowed by three punctures in the second half of the 340-kilometre race. This dropped them to sixth place at the finish, where they received a great ovation from an appreciative audience. They ended the season in fifth place behind their team-mates.

The eighth and last race of the season, held in the gold mining region of Westonaria in the West Rand, started in light rain after a heavy downpour on Friday night and grip and visibility made life very difficult for the competitors.

Both RFS crews handled the treacherous conditions with great skill. Veterans Grobler and Ter Stege used all their experience and guile to climb from sixth at the start to second behind eventual winners Anthony Taylor and Chris Birkin (Toyota Hilux) at the compulsory halfway service stop at the Kloof gold mine recreation club.

Du Plooy and Janse van Vuuren, have grown in stature under the expert influence of their distinguished team-mates, were equally skillful in the mud and the wet, reaching the halfway point in an impressive fourth place after starting seventh and despite sportingly stopping to lend their jack to a stranded rival.

“Apart from a problem with the windscreen wipers, which we fixed at the halfway service stop, we had a clean run throughout the race,” reported Du Plooy. “The conditions were bad and we had to work very hard to stay on the route and not lose our way. Henk did a great navigating job under the circumstances.”

Grobler wore his usual wide smile at the finish. “Hennie and I really enjoyed our last race together,” he said. “It was tough – one of the toughest races I’ve been in – but I learnt something important today: I always knew you had to be fit to race, but you have to be even fitter to be able to change three flat wheels in 170 kilometres!

“Congratulations to Christiaan and Henk for a truly great result under the worst conditions. Hennie and I leave the team in good hands. Thank you to RFS Motorsport and team owner Chris du Plooy for everything. It’s been a great ride.”

Always quick with a joke and an impish smile, Grobler declared at the prize-giving, where he and Ter Stege were honoured and received a standing ovation, that he wasn’t hanging up his gloves, he was finally packing them away.
