A bitter sweet off road racing season finale for RFS Racing in Gold 400

The season-ending Gold 400 on the West Rand of Gauteng will see the crowning of a new champion in the production vehicle category of the Absa South African Off Road Car Championship on Saturday, November 24.

Sadly, it won’t be either of RFS Racing’s race-winning combinations of Christiaan du Plooy/Henk Janse van Vuuren or Hannes Grobler/Hennie ter Stege in their RFS BMW X3 cars. With one race and a maximum of 25 points available, they are currently fourth and fifth respectively in the championship and more than 25 points in arrears.

Even more sadly it will be the final appearance in the championship of both Grobler and Ter Stege, two of the most experienced and popular personalities in the off road fraternity.

But the irrepressible Grobler, 57, characteristically refuses to be sad in any way. He has called time on an illustrious 36-year motor racing career, during which he was won 10 national championships in rallying and off road racing, because he says it’s time.

“I still enjoy my racing,” he says with his ever present smile “but there comes a time when you need to spend more time with your family. I’ve been blessed with a long and enjoyable career, with more than my fair share of success. These last few years I have concentrated on helping RFS Motorsport to develop the BMW X3 into a competitive off-roader that can win any national championship event and also to help Christiaan and Henk gain the confidence to take over and win races for the team in the years ahead.”

Regardless of championship aspirations, both RFS crews will be keen to end the season on a high. The home-grown V8-engined BMW X3 has proved a winner in both Grobler’s and Du Plooy’s hands, most recently when Du Plooy and Janse van Vuuren scored a maiden victory in the Sun City 400 in North West in July.

“Hennie and I aim to go out on a high,” said Grobler. “We reckon we’ve still got it in us to win and we’ll be giving it a full go in our last race. We want the youngsters to remember us!”

Team owner and former driver Chris du Plooy acknowledges that the team will miss Grobler’s wise counsel and depth of experience and knowledge. “Hannes is a legend and one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. He has been a huge part of our team’s success and we will miss him in off road racing. But he has taught us all well and we will build on the success we have shared with him and Hennie.”

Race headquarters for the Gold 400, the start/finish and the designated service park will all be located at the Kloof Country Club in Glenharvie, some 70 kilometres west of Johannesburg. The Donaldson Prologue that determines the start order for Saturday’s race will be run over a 60 kilometre route and will start at 12.30 on Friday, November 23.

The race will start at 08.00 and will cover two loops of a 180 kilometre route that is expected to provide a challenging mixture of fast open sections along firebreaks with rocky technical sections in the Highveld koppies.
