First puncture of the season

Overnight leaders Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton (Sasol Racing Ford Fiesta) picked up their first puncture of the season on the final round of the SA National Rally Championship, the Garden Route Rally, on today’s third stage and lost their lead to Hans Weijs and Bjorn Degandt (BP Volkswagen Polo) to finish the first half of the days’ route in fourth place.

The championship leaders are now 1.31 seconds off the lead. Second despite struggling with electrical problems are Enzo Kuun/Guy Hodgson (BP Volkswagen Polo) who are 12 seconds behind the leaders. Third and the only leading competitors who have avoided a puncture so far are Jon and Doug Williams, 29 seconds in arrears.

Fifth overall at the Dunlop Service stop with three stages to go and enjoying their best run this year are Japie van Niekerk and Gerhard Snyman (New Africa Developments VW Polo). Johnny Gemmell/Carolyn Swan (Castrol Toyota Auris) who’s championship hopes are pretty well gone after loosing three and a half minutes yesterday with three punctures are up to sixth from their overnight position of ninth.

Cronje/Houghton had a puncture at the end of the day’s first stage and then suffered a second puncture during the third stage. The first three stages of this morning will now be repeated in the forests above Knysna before the finish in the Wilderness later this afternoon.
