Kelvin van der Linde makes motor racing history

Kelvin van der Linde, the rising star of South African motor racing, has made South African motor racing history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of a senior circuit racing national championship.

Back-to-back victories in a Ferodo VW Polo in the season finale of the Engen Volkswagen Cup at the Kyalami grand prix circuit on Saturday saw the 16-year-old grade 10 Johannesburg pupil eclipse the achievement of his uncle Etienne, who was 42 days older when he won the national Formula Vee championship in 1994. Grandfather Hennie and father Shaun are also former national circuit racing champions.

It was only his second year in the competition, having already made history last year by becoming the youngest driver to line up on the starting grid for a senior circuit race. The age limit is 15 on June 30 and his birthday is June 20. He went on to finish third in the 2011 championship and was named Rookie of the Year.

He dominated this year’s championship with more wins (seven), more podiums (14) and more qualifying bonus points than any other driver. The winning margin over second-placed Devin Robertson, the 2011 champion, was a massive 62 points.
The VW Cup is a one-make formula in which mainly young drivers compete in production VW Polo Vivos. It is a closely contested competition run over nine rounds and 20 races on six different circuits in five provinces. Engines are supplied by Volkswagen and are sealed, so technically the differentiating factors between competitors are the skill of the team in setting up the car and the skill of the driver.

“I am very proud to follow in my dad and granddad and uncle’s footsteps,” said Van der Linde, who also boasts two national karting titles. “They have been an inspiration to me and a great help in my motor racing career. I am very fortunate to have my dad and my granddad helping prepare my race car and also to have sponsors like Ferodo and First Race”.
