ANOTHER VICTORY FOR FATHER AND SON PAIR
The father and son combination of Tony and Michael continued on their merry way with their fourth overall victory of the season at round five of the Northern Region Off Road Championship at Sun City on Saturday, 28 July.
For the Goveias (Gearbox Services BAT) it was also their fifth Class B victory of the season with the pair well clear in the Special Vehicle overall and class title races. The race was run in conjunction with the Sun City 400, round five of the Absa Off Road Championship.
The Gouveias have swept all before them this season. In another impressive performance they finished nearly three minutes clear of veteran Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk (Portable Shade/KEC Zarco) and were the only finishers in Class P.
Second place in Class B went to Johan Steyn and Saun can den Berg, in a Zarco, who were around 11 minutes behind the Gouveias. Third were Sidriaan de Villiers and Dwayne Voogt, in a UTV, who came in ahead of twin brothers Clive and Shawn Sutherland in the Jimco Tandem.
At the front of the Production Vehicle category it was a family affair with Ian Boshoff and Mia van Wyk (Toyota Hilux) finishing around eight minutes ahead of Boshoff’s brother Gene and Lotter Klein in another Toyota Hilux. The pair were first and second in Class E with Michael Fine and Dewald Hattingh third in another Toyota after being hit with a 10 minute penalty for missing drivers briefing.
Class D honours went to Jaco Visser and Naldo Pieterse, in a Mitsubishi Colt, who were the only finishers. Among the casualties were championship leaders Hennie Lemmer and Paul Slabbert, in a Mitsubishi Colt, and Theo and Gavin Wagner in a Nissan.
