CLOSE WIN FOR NEL/DE KLERK ON UD TRUCKS LICHTENBURG 200
Veteran former national champion Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk scored a narrow overall win in the Special vehicle category on the UD Trucks Lichtenburg 200, round three of the Northern Regions Off Road Championship, over the weekend.
Nel and de Klerk, in the Portable Shade ZarcoTruggy, edged out Johan and Sean van Staden, in the KEC BAT, by just seven seconds in a close finish. While father Johan currently leads the Special Vehicle championship in the Absa Off Road Championship, it was young Sean van Staden’s first off road event.
“It was a pleasure to get away from the intensity of the national series and enjoy an outing with my son,” said van Staden. “We had an enjoyable race and I am looking forward to doing more races with Sean.”
Third overall went to another father and son combination, the East Rand based pair of Tony and Michael Gouveia (Gearbox Services BAT), who were looking for their third overall win in a row.
Nel and de Klerk also took Class P ahead of the van Stadens while there was compensation for the Gouveias with the pair making it a hat-trick of wins in Class B. Second and third in Class B went to Gerhard van der Linde and Bela Coetzer and Johannes Steyn and Saun van der Berg in a Zarco.
On the Production Vehicle front Jaco du Plessis and Louis Bester scored a comfortable win ahead of Hennie Lemmer and Paul Slabbert, in a Mitsubishi Colt, with around seven minutes separating the two crews. Third were Willie Welman and Rhyno Snyman.
Lemmer and Slabbert took the Class D honours, Jeandre Coetzee won Class E and du Plessis and Bester scored in Class Z.
The event, based at the Lichtenburg race circuit, also drew a number of Absa Off Road Championship entries with the national competitors taking time out to do development work on machinery. The next round of the Absa series is the Atlas Copco Timbertrack 400 in Richmond, in KwaZulu-Natal, this weekend.
