COMFORTABLE WIN FOR VAN AARDTS ON NORTHERN REGIONS EVENT
The father and son team of Jaco and Jan van Aardt scored a comfortable overall victory in the Northern Regions Off Road Championship event that ran in conjunction with the 4x4 Mega World national series race at Carnival City over the weekend.
The van Aardts, in the home built Janco, had plenty to spare over veteran former South African champion Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk in a Zarco. The van Aardts also took Class P by a healthy margin ahead of Philip de Vries and Johan Deysel in a Zarco.
The van Aardts and de Vries/Deysel were the only finishers in Class P. Among the casualties were frontrunners Greg Higgins and Mick Oosthuizen (WPP) who were forced to retire with CV joint damage.
Nel and de Klerk took the Class B honours ahead of another father and son team, Tony and Michael Gouveia, in a BAT. Third were Marthinus le Roux and Gustav Pienaar in a Sandmaster.
The Class E honours went to teenagers Jason Venter and Vincent van Alleman in the 4x4 Mega World Toyota Hilux. They came in ahead of the Ford ranger of Lappies Labuschagne and Andre Brits.
Venter and van Alleman were competing in both the national and regional event. The national race was run over two laps of the course with the regional competitors completing a single lap.
Venter and van Alleman did enough on the first lap to win Class E in the regional championship, but failed to score in the national race when they were forced to retire on the second lap with a damaged suspension.
