THE Engen Volkswagen Cup field provided an overdose of racing action at East London on Saturday. Round six of the WesBank Super Series saw the competitors in this championship tackle two races on the East London Grand Prix Circuit.
The big winner of the day was Lee Thompson (M30 – Ferodo Racing) who claimed overall victory. Championship leader Devin Robertson (2 – Sparco / Big Boss Auto) claimed second for the day with Bryan Morgan (4 – Greatsoft) claimed the final podium step.
Action in this single-make series that fields Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars started early in the day. Thompson made his move on Miguel Pasqualli (M1 – Engen Xtreme) in the opening stages of the first race to claim the lead while Kosie Weyers (3 – Engen Xtreme) took an indirect route through the final corner of the lap – after coming to the attention of Kelvin van der Linde (31 – Ferodo Racing) and caused chaos as he got himself back in form for the main straight.
While Pasqualli and Morgan were fighting for that third position on the track, an incident in Cocabana saw a number of cars disappearing off track, Trevor Bland (10 – Action Print) and Ian Prinsloo (20 – Bizhub) among them and unable to continue the race.
The chequered flag signalling the end of race one saw Thompson cross for first place followed by Kyle Barnes (5 – PG Glass / Q8 Oils) and Morgan.
Race two and Weyers made a dive for the front of the field, moving from fourth to first in lap one while Thompson gained a place to advance from a third to second. Barnes, Morgan and championship leader Robertson found themselves involved in a serious battle on the track. The trio jostled one another for position with Van der Linde also making his presence known.
Weyers claimed the race win this time out with Thompson in second place and Robertson crossing the line for third. The overall results for the day – divided into the Engen Volkswagen Cup and Masters categories – saw Robertson claim the victory with Morgan in second and Jeffrey Kruger (24 – Steamsure Combustion) in third place. The Masters category victory was taken by Thompson with Dean Ball (M7 – Champion Motors KWT) second and Pasqualli in third place.
There are going to be Engen Volkswagen Cup workshops around the country which are a hotbed of activity as repairs are effected in time for the Killarney race meeting on Saturday, 1 October. The racing field’s pits were a collection of dented and battered Volkswagen Polo Vivos by the end of the day of racing. Bumpers, doors and fenders all received a proper bashing during the action.
