Record entry for Barberspan 200
information supplied by: Cross Country Commission (Media) 15 August 2013

A record entry will line-up for the Barberspan 200, round six of the Northern Region Cross Country Championship, on Saturday 17 August.
When entries closed earlier this week the organisers, the Barberspan Motor Club, had received 50 entries in the Production and Special Vehicle classes. Among the entries are a number of competitors from the national Donaldson Cross Country Championship, who are taking the opportunity to get a feel for conditions which will be similar on the Vryburg 400 on September 6 and 7.
“As a club we are delighted with the strength of the entry,” said Barberspan Motor Club chairman Neil Meyer. “This race has a proud heritage and the size of the entry is indicative of the place Barberspan holds in South African cross country racing.”
MSA Cross Country Commission president Richard Schilling, himself a veteran of Barberspan races said the efforts of Barberspan Club chairman Meyer and Northern Region representative Greg Higgins needed to be congratulated on a fine effort in organising the race.  Schilling added the size and quality of the entry once again underlined the strength of cross country racing at regional and national level.
A number of previous winners and South African champions from days gone by, when the race held national championship status, will also descend on the race and will add to a festive atmosphere. Organised by former Toyota Desert Race winner Richard Carolin the ‘old timers’ will be making a sentimental journey back to Barberspan.
Also making a sentimental journey back – but as competitors – will be former Toyota Desert Race winner Rob Wark and former motorcycle competitor Chris Davies. Wark and Davies will team up in the K9 Racing Aceco.
Among the national competitors in the Production Vehicle category will be former SA champion Jannie Visser and his son Chris junior. Competitors who regularly compete at national level in the Special Vehicle category include Marius and Jolinda Fourie, Neil Meyer and Joseph Lewis and brothers Daniel and Louw Zeelie.
On the Northern Region front some close championship battles will provide for exciting racing. Championship fights in both the Production and Special vehicle categories are delicately poised and, at this stage of the season, every point is a precious one.
Race headquarters and the designated service point are at the Agri Mareetsane Boresaal (S26°08.842’     E025°25.606’) with the prologue to determine start positions starting at 09:00. The main race will start at 12:00 with free public entry to race headquarters and the service point.
The route is spectator friendly with braai facilities at the main spectator point. Food and drink will also be on sale at race headquarters.
