OFF ROAD COMMUNITY TARGETS RECORD AT CHARITY CHRISTMAS PARTY

One of South African motorsport’s longest running charity events will celebrate its 24th birthday at Tarlton International Raceway on Sunday, December 9.

The Absa Off Road Championship community is this year hoping to raise more than R100 000 at the annual Christmas party for Logwood Village for children suffering from Down’s Syndrome and intellectual disabilities. The sprawling Tarlton complex has been the traditional home of the event since its inception, with the event this year again organised in conjunction with the Rotary Merlins Club in Roodepoort and the Harley Davidson Club.

“Management at Logwood Village recently told us the party is the biggest day of the year for the children,” said chief organiser and South African National Off Road Association president Richard Schilling. “For nearly 25 years we have had incredible support from the off road community, Merlins Rotary, Mick van Rensburg at Tarlton and, more recently, the Harley Davidson Club.

“The initial support has been encouraging and we are hoping that this year we will for the first time raise more than R100 000 for less privileged people.”

The organisers are catering for 200 children with morning rides for the kids in off road cars on a specially prepared circuit. There will also be rides on Harley Davidsons on the Tarlton drag racing strip.

The morning rides will be followed by lunch and puppet and magician shows with the highlight of the day the arrival of Father Christmas.

“Economic times are not easy but we are confident the off road community will once again help people who are less fortunate than themselves,” Schilling said. “Over the years the charity day has brought a little joy into the lives of hundreds of children, and we are looking forward to another happy event.”
