Van der Linde brothers dominate at Vereeninging
Bryanston, Gauteng, brothers Kelvin and Sheldon van der Linde were in dominant form in the fifth round of the Northern Regions Rotax Max Challenge in Vereeniging on Saturday. Both youngsters, driving Birel karts, finished first overall in their respective classes for the meeting, the 11-year-old Sheldon unbeaten all day in the Mini Max class and 14-year-old Kelvin first in two of his Junior Max races and second in the other.
Sheldon Van der Linde was in a class of his own. He was quickest in qualifying at the 1,14-km Vereeniging Kart Club’s circuit by nearly half a second over chief rival Aedan van Vuuren and went on to beat Van Vuuren by 4,6 seconds in race one (over 10 laps), by 3,3 seconds in race two (over 15 laps) and by 6,03 seconds in the final race (over 20 laps). He was also credited with the fastest lap in each race.
Kelvin van der Linde qualified third in Junior Max behind regular rivals Chad Maciver and Aston Hare in a very tight affair that saw the three separated by just 0,04 seconds. He won the first race by half a second from Maciver with Hare third. Hare turned the tables in race two, winning by 0,04 seconds from Van der Linde with Shayur Harpal third, 1,4 seconds behind Van der Linde.
The eldest son of former national touring car and production car champion Shaun reasserted his authority in the final race with a 0,6-second win over Maciver. Raoul Hyman was third, 3,5 seconds behind Van der Linde.
