Swanepoel suffers setback in Foxhills.
Round 5 of the Maxxis British Championship took place at the former GP circuit of Foxhills over the weekend. CAS Honda racer, Gareth Swanepoel, suffered a terrible crash in the opening stages of moto 1 when his front fork broke on the take off of a jump. Swanepoel hurt his wrist and could not finish the moto. The South African tried to start the second moto however the pain was too severe after one lap so he retired and had to watch from the sidelines.
“I guess it’s a freak accident and that’s just motorsport – these things can happen.” admitted Swanepoel. “ I went to see my specialist, Dr Claes on Monday and after having it X-rayed and checked there is luckily no fracture however the wrist is quite swollen so I will have to take it easy and stay off the bike leading up to Lommel. I will have to wear a brace but it should be ok to race this weekend at the Belgian GP. I was really looking forward to racing in Lommel as it has become somewhat of a home track for me and I have lots of friends and fans that will be coming to watch so I can’t disappoint them.”
Swanepoel has slipped to fourth in the championship standings but with 3 rounds remaining and 75 points per round up for grabs, a podium finish is still possible.
