Mercedes-Benz to recognise top talent at MJOY

Johannesburg. Mercedes-Benz South Africa Corporate Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to recognising and rewarding South Africa’s top motoring journalists through their sponsorship of the prestigious “Editor of the Year” award at the Guild’s annual Motoring Journalist of the Year competition.

“What makes the Mercedes-Benz Editor of the Year Award so special is that it’s the only one of the awards presented by the Guild annually of which the winner is decided on entirely by the Guild’s members,” says Christo Valentyn, Chairman of the SAGMJ and organiser of the competition. “After a period in which nominations are accepted for editors our members feel have balanced the demands of publishers and readers while nurturing journalistic talent and successfully making the critical decisions that turn a good publication into a great one, the shortlist of candidates is opened up to a vote by all Guild members.”

Mayur Bhana, Divisional Manager: Group Corporate Affairs at Mercedes-Benz South Africa, agrees. “The role of an editor in the motoring media is absolutely vital to ensure that the demands of publishers and readers are balanced, while nurturing journalistic talent and successfully making the critical calls that turn a good publication into a great one. At Mercedes-Benz South Africa we are strong supporters of a successful, objective, excellent motoring journalism fraternity, which would not be possible without the guidance and leadership of great editors.”

The SAGMJ’s Motoring Journalist of the Year competition seeks to recognise excellence in motoring journalism and photography and to honour journalists and photographers who inform, enlighten and entertain readers, listeners or viewers. The SAGMJ believes that, through the presentation of these awards, its members will aspire to improve and advance the quality and standards of motoring journalism and photography in South Africa.

All members of the SAGMJ are allowed to vote. To do so for one of the two nominees, send an e-mail to sagmj.mjoy@gmail.com, with the name of your editor of choice – Mark Smyth (Business Day Motor News) or Wynter Murdoch (Automobil, Imperial Auto, Auto Annual & Future Trucking & Logistics) – in the subject line.

VOTING FOR THE 2014 MERCEDES-BENZ EDITOR OF THE YEAR CLOSES AT 16;00 ON FRIDAY, 27 JUNE 2014.

The 2014 SAGMJ / Toyota Financial Services Motoring Journalist of the Year awards take place on Wednesday, 2 July 2014.
