Automobile Association reaffirms its support of road safety in motoring journalism
Johannesburg. The Automobile Association of South Africa will again join the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) in recognising and rewarding exceptional reporting on road safety at the Guild’s annual Motoring Journalist of the Year awards.
“The SAGMJ believes that responsible road usage and road safety in general should be a priority among all road users, but especially so amongst its members,” says Christo Valentyn, Chairman of the SAGMJ and organiser of the competition. “The SAGMJ and its members can make a tangible difference not only through leading by example when out on our country’s highways and byways, but also by promoting road safety and responsible road safety in the media.”
The award, presented for a feature related specifically to road safety, serves to recognise members who present this subject in an entertaining and easy to understand manner while driving home crucial values.
The Automobile Association of South Africa is of the opinion “that faster and more concerted action is needed to prevent many more lives being needlessly lost on South African roads. The Guild is playing an important role through addressing road safety matters such as law enforcement and raising public awareness, amongst others, the implementation of road safety legislation and to make road infrastructure safer for pedestrians and cyclists”, says Marius Luyt, Head of Public Affairs at the AA.
The winner of The AA Road Safety Feature of the Year award will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a cash prize from the Automobile Association of South Africa, as well as a one-year membership to the AA.
The SAGMJ’s Motoring Journalist of the Year competition, sponsored by Toyota Financial Services South Africa since 2013, seeks to recognise excellence in motoring journalism and photography and to honour journalists and photographers who inform, enlighten and entertain readers, listeners or viewers. The SAGMJ believes that, through the presentation of these awards, its members will aspire to improve and advance the quality and standards of motoring journalism and photography in South Africa.
The 2014 SAGMJ / Toyota Financial Services Motoring Journalist of the Year awards take place on Wednesday, 2 July 2014.
