Formula Volkswagen racers provide street race action

333019 OPEN-WHEEL race cars and concrete barriers are not natural friends. Despite this fact, the two came together in Durban when competitors in the Formula Volkswagen single-seater championship contested round five of the WesBank Super Series.

This national championship series, against all the odds, proved to be virtually incident-free with just Nicholas van Weely (87 - Anglorand) making contact with the walls that lined the street circuit. Even that was not as serious as it could have been, but his misadventure in qualifying meant he could not compete in the first race and had to wait for Sunday to compete.

The top five Formula Volkswagen competitors in qualifying all posted times below the one minute mark around the track. Simon Moss (38 – Tsogo Sun / Terry Moss Racing) was the fastest of the racers posting 57.530 seconds on his quickest lap with Ernie van der Walt (95 – Ferodo Racing) rounded out the fastest qualifiers with a 59.870 second lap.

When the lights went out for the first race it was Moss that made good on his qualifying performance and raced hard for the lead. Defending champion Jayde Kruger (1 – GF Plastics / First Freight / Hypress) did what he needed to do – stay within sight of Moss and claim as many points as possible while steering clear of the danger presented by the concrete barriers.

The battle in that first race was the one taking place between Van der Walt and Nic Chapman (14 – Bamboo Rock Mining) for third place. The pair fought a strategic battle with Van der Walt the victor in their two-car tussle. For Chapman this resulted is his best ever finish to date in his rookie season in Formula Volkswagen.

Race two saw the leading pair of Moss and Kruger again making a break from the chasing pack with Chapman and Van der Walt battling for position. This time though Van Weely could get some race action and mix it up on track with these two.

Finishing positions for the top two were identical to race one with Chapman and Van der Walt swopping positions for third and fourth place.

The Formula Volkswagen racers will tackle the challenge of Phakisa Freeway in Welkom at round six of the WesBank Super Series on Saturday, 4 August.
