LADY LUCK CONTINUES TO FROWN UPON JOHAN FOURIE
Johan Fourie and his crew were in high spirits leading up to round five of the WesBank Super Series, but his Bridgestone Production Car weekend was cut bitterly short after a massive accident during Saturday's qualifying session.
Friday's practice session went well, with Johan setting the fourth fastest lap in his EPS Audi S4. Everything seemed to be on track for a good showing, until Saturday's qualifying session. Johan took to the track and completed his warm up lap when going to into his first flying lap, he realised that he was going into turn one too hot. He aborted the corner, opting to go straight using the access road to slow down. He made a u-turn and waited in the slip road to rejoin the track.
In the mean time, Mishal Sing got the corner all wrong and planted his BMW securely into the concrete barrier. By this stage, the Class T field were coming up to the accident. Nathan and Formato touched, Nathan overshot the corner ramming straight into Fourie, causing irreparable damage to both cars.
"I just don't know what to do to get some luck. It was a disastrous weekend which ended with huge amounts of damage through absolutely no fault of my own. I backed out of the corner because I knew I was going too fast to make the turn. I did the sensible thing," explained Johan with a heavy heart.
The extent of the damage will only be know during the week when the team begin to strip the car.
"I would like to thank all of my fans for their encouraging messages of support, you give me hope that we can overcome all of these hurdles and get back to the top."
The Bridgestone Production Car Championship will take a winter recess, with the next round taking place in Welkom in August.
