IN SHORT
Geely South Africa continues the expansion of its local line-up with the addition of the striking new LC Cross. Essentially, the Cross is a macho version of the familiar LC, which was introduced locally in April 2011. Since launch the LC has proven itself as a popular, dependable, cost-effective motor vehicle. Now, the LC Cross offers buyers the opportunity to experience the same attributes as in the LC, but with added equipment, ground clearance and a bold new look.
When the LC was introduced in 2011, it set new standards for vehicles in its price bracket, thanks mainly to comprehensive safety and convenience features. The LC Cross continues in this tradition, and boasts an impressive equipment list, especially considering its price.

Items such as ABS brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution, as many as six airbags, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, audio system, power steering and air conditioning are all standard in the flagship model, though even the entry level GS sports most of these items.

The LC immediately drew attention among the public due to its unique styling, which has been likened to the look of a panda bear. The LC Cross features similar dimensions, but considerably more macho lines. The front grille, for instance, seems much more business-like, compared to the smiling ‘face’ of the LC. Similarly, the slightly increased ride height of 160mm gives the new vehicle a purposeful look, which is further enhanced by the spare wheel mounted on the rear hatch. This hatch opens upward, with the spare wheel in place, making access to the luggage area easy despite the position of the spare wheel.

GEELY
Chinese manufacturer Geely, the automotive company that forms part of the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, started manufacturing motorcycles in 1994, and began producing small vans in 1998. Since then the company has grown considerably, having also been floated on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2004.
The Geely brand became a global household name when Geely International purchased Volvo Cars in 2008 – a move which was initially aimed at building Volvo-branded cars in China, but has since resulted in a technology transfer that can be seen in Geely’s newest products. With its rapid growth and global expansion (Geely plans to start exports to the UK before the end of 2012).

THE WAY FORWARD
Geely South Africa’s model range will continue to expand, with the arrival of the SC5 hatchback later in the 2012. However, the company is also introducing larger vehicles globally, and it is expected that both the EC7 C-segment sedan and hatch will reach South Africa during 2013. The EC7 is the first Chinese vehicle to receive a 4-star rating on the European New Car Assessment Programme (Europ NCAP).
Geely SA’s model expansion will further continue with the addition of the GX7 SUV, which will also arrive locally during next year.

“BRING IT ON”
With the introduction of the LC Cross, Geely SA confidently refers to their suggested retailprices, as “price challenges”. This somewhat bold, yet cheeky approach ties in perfectly with the persona of the new LC Cross, sporting its “Bring It On” pay-off line. Based on the total package including, but not limited to merely specification, features, engines, safety and quality,Geely SA challenges the marketplace to “better” this offering. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!

LC CROSS:
SAFETY
As with the Geely LC, the LC Cross is endowed with considerable safety equipment for a vehicle in this price range. The top-of-the-range GT model comes with six airbags including side curtain airbags, while the mid-range GL sports dual frontal airbags. While all three models are equipped with three-point shoulder harnesses as standard, the GL and GT also sport pre-tensioners for additional protection.
All models feature ABS brakes with EBD as standard, as well as side reinforcement in the doors. Child safety locks are also standard, as are rear spoilers with high-mounted stoplights.

CONVENIENCE
All LC Cross models come with an impressive array of standard equipment, including power steering and air conditioning across the range. The entry-level GS, as well as the mid-range GL both feature radio/CD systems with four speakers, while the GT gets two additional tweeters. All models have power windows front and rear, electric mirrors, rear window wipers and rear window demisters. The GT model is also equipped with a Park Distance Control (PDC) system.
As part of its macho exterior, the LC Cross also sports roof rails as standard, in addition to the rear hatch-mounted spare wheel. The spare wheel is a full-size steel wheel, while all models are equipped with aluminium rims and fitted with tyres of 175/65R14.

POWER
The new LC Cross shares its engine with the LC range, namely a four-cylinder, normally aspirated petrol engine with a displacement of 1,342 cc. This in-line motor features 16 valves activated by a double overhead camshaft and electronic fuel injection. It is mated to Geely’s 5F 5-speed manual transmission, which drives the front wheels. Power is 63 kW at 6,000 r/min and the engine has 110 Nm of torque available at 5,200 r/min.

PRICES
Geely continues its high value-for-money approach by offering the uniquely styled and attractive LC Cross range at highly competitive prices. With that said, the LC Cross is entirely unique in the South African market, as there are no other, similar vehicles for sale in this price range:
